From the middle of the 19th Century more and more Berliners came to the area around Potsdam. Those who could afford to do so built summer houses here mostly on or in the vicinity of one of the many lakes. From the start, the Schwielowsee and its immediate vicinity were among the favourite residences and excursion sites of summer holiday makers and visitors. Some moved here altogether.
With our bikes we will visit places where well-known people such as the writer Theodor Fontane, the artists Karl Hagemeister and Sigwart Sprotte, the physicist Albert Einstein as well as the plant breeder and philosopher Karl Foerster spent time and gave themselves over completely to the beauty of this countryside. Sights include the palaces in Caputh and Petzow, Einstein’s house in Caputh, the museum of the Havelland artists’ colony in Ferch, as well the Japanese bonsai garden or the island city of Werder.
If you like, we can also stop at the sallow thorn plant in Petzow and try out the culinary creations at the restaurant there. Just enjoy the irresistible combination of nature, culture and pleasures of the palate!
